ts39154 1.5a ultra low ldo w ith enable 3 / 7 version: d08 pin description pin configuration pin description enable ttl/coms co mpatible input. logic high is enable; logic low or open is shutdown input unregulated input: +16v maximum supply ground ground: ground pin and tab / heat sink are internally connected. output regulator output feed back (adjustable) adjustment input: fe edback input. connect to resistive voltage - divider network. functional diagram application information the ts39154 is high performance with low dropout voltage regulator suitable for moderate to high current and voltag e regulator application. its 700 mv dropout voltage at full load and over temperature makes it especially valuable in battery power systems and as high efficiency noise filters in post regulator applications. unlike normal npn transistor design, where the base to emitter voltage drop and collector to emitter saturation voltage limit the minimum dropout voltage, dropout performance of the pnp output of these devices is limited only by low v ce saturation voltage. the ts39154 is fully protected from damage due to fault conditions. linear curr ent limiting is provided. output current during overload conditions is constant. thermal shutdown the device when the die temperature exceeds the maximum safe operating temperature. transient protection allows device survival even when the input voltage sp ikes above and below nominal. the output structure of these regulators allows voltages in excess of the desired output voltage to be applied without reverse current flow. output capacitor requirement the ts39154 is requires an output capacitor to maintain stability and improve transient response is necessary. the value of this capacitor is dependent upon the output current, lower currents al low smaller capacitors. ts39154 output capacitor selection is dependent upon the esr of the output capacitor to mainta in stability. when the output capacitor is 10uf or greater, the output capacitor should have an esr less than 2 . this will improve transient response as well as promote stability. ultra low esr capacitors (<100m ), such as ceramic chip capacitors, may promote instability. these very low esr levels may cause an oscillation and/or under damped transient response. a low esr solid tantalum capacitor works extremely well and provides good transient response and stability over temperature aluminum electrolytes can also be used, as long as the esr of the capacitor is <2 . the value of the output capacitor can be increased without limit. higher capacitance values help to improve transient response and ripple rejection and reduce output noise.
ts39154 1.5a ultra low ldo w ith enable 4 / 7 version: d08 application information (continue) input capacitor requirement an input capacitor of 1uf or greater is recommended when the device i s more than 4 away from the bulk ac supply capacitance or when the supply is a battery. small, surface mount, ceramic chip capacitors can be used for bypassing. larger values will help to improve ripple rejection by bypassing the input to the regulator, f urther improving the integrity of the output voltage. minimum load current  the ts39154 is specified between finite loads. if the output current is too small leakage currents dominate and the output voltage rises. a 10ma minimum load current is necessary fo r proper regulation. adjustable regulator design the ts39154 is allow ed to programming the output voltage anywhere between 1.25 and the 16v maximum operating rating of the family. two resistors are used. resistors can be quite large up to 1m , because of the very high input impedance and low bias current of the sense comparator, the resistor values are calculated by: where v out is the desired output voltage. above application circuit shows component definition. applications with widely v arying load currents may scale the resistors to draw the minimum load current required for proper operation. enable input ts3915 4 feature an active - high enable (en) input that allows on/off control of the regulator. current drain reduces to zero when th e device is shutdown, with only micro - amperes of leakage current. the en input has ttl/cmos compatible thresholds for simple interfacing with logic interfacing. en may be directly tied to v in and pulled up to the maximum supply voltage. table 1: resistor select for output voltage setting v out r 1 r 2 5v 470k 155k 3.3v 470k 290k 2.5v 470k 460k 1.8v 210k 470k 1. 5v 100k 470k
ts39154 1.5a ultra low ldo w ith enable 5 / 7 version: d08 applica tion information (continue) thermal characteristics ts3915 4 linear regulators are simple to use, the most complicated design parameters to consider are thermal characteristics, thermal design requires the following application specification parameters: ? ma ximum ambient temperature , t a ? output current, i out ? output voltage, v out ? input voltage, v in calculate the power dissipation of the regulator from these numbers and the device parameters from this datasheet, where the ground current is taken from data sheet. p d = (v in v out ) x i out + v in x i gnd the heat sink thermal resistance is determined by: ? sa = (t j(max) t a ) / p d ( ? jc + ? cs ) where t j(max) 125 o c and ? cs is between 0 o c and 2 o c /w. the heat sink may by significantly reduced in applications where the m inimum input voltage is know and is large compared with the dropout voltage and distribute the heat between this resistor and the regulator. the low dropout properties of vertical pnp regulators allow significant reductions in regulator power dissipation a nd the associated heat sink without compromising performance. when this technique is employed, a capacitor of at least 1 u f is needed directly between the input and regulator ground.
